DonutSMP Crates & Keys — ROI by Key Tier (Worth Spinning?)

DonutSMP crate keys ranked by expected value — which to spin, which to skip, what the average loot actually nets.

DonutSMP's crate system lets you spin keys for randomized loot. Some keys are profitable on average, some are pure gamble, some are tax. Here's the honest ROI analysis.

How crates work

Get keys from voting, events, ranks, or purchase. Use /crates near the spawn crate area. Each key spins the crate, giving a randomized drop from that crate's loot table.

The loot table is weighted — common drops are frequent + cheap, rare drops are infrequent + valuable. Expected value (EV) is what an average key spin returns over many spins.

Common DonutSMP crate types

(Naming varies by current season — adapt to whatever's live.)

Vote Crate (free from voting)

  • EV per key: ~50-150k coins
  • Common drops: food, basic gear, small coin payouts
  • Rare drops: spawner shards, mid-tier items
  • Verdict: always spin — they're free, just don't expect anything wild

Common Crate (~5-10M coins per key)

  • EV per key: ~3-7M coins
  • Common: blocks, basic enchanted gear, ~1M coin payouts
  • Rare: small spawners, enchanted books
  • Verdict: -30% to -50% expected return. Pure gamble. Skip unless rich.

Rare Crate (~30-50M coins per key)

  • EV per key: ~25-45M coins
  • Common: mid-tier enchanted gear, 5-10M coin payouts
  • Rare: spawners, Elytra fragments
  • Verdict: -10% to -20% EV. Less bad than common, still net negative.

Legendary Crate (~150M coins per key)

  • EV per key: ~140-180M coins
  • Common: spawners, enchanted books
  • Rare: Elytras, God Apples in bulk
  • Verdict: roughly break-even with occasional big wins. Worth it if you enjoy the gamble.

Mythic Crate (~500M+ per key, rare)

  • EV per key: variable
  • Top drops: Wither Skeleton spawners, unique cosmetic items
  • Verdict: only if you have 1B+ in disposable coins.

Why crates almost always lose money

The house always wins. DonutSMP's crate loot tables are tuned so the server profits from key purchases. Individual lucky spins can pop, but average outcomes net negative.

Comparison: buying the items directly is almost always cheaper than gambling for them via crates.

When crates ARE worth spinning

  • Free vote crates — always spin, you can't lose what you didn't pay for
  • Event-only crates — sometimes contain exclusive items not available elsewhere
  • You're already rich — entertainment value > coin loss
  • You're hunting one specific item — if a rare crate has the only source of an item you want, the gamble is the only path

When to avoid

  • You're under 1B coin net worth
  • You can buy the desired items directly on /ah for less
  • You hate gambling losses

The smart alternative

Instead of gambling 50M coins on a Rare Crate hoping for a spawner:

  1. Just buy a Skeleton Spawner for ~30M coins on /ah (or $0.49 at Donut Depot)
  2. Save the other 20M coins for direct purchases

You get a guaranteed item + leftover coins. Crates only "win" if you hit an unusually rare drop.

Frequently Asked

Are crate odds posted? Sometimes — some servers show approximate odds, others hide them. Assume worst-case.

Can you cheat the crate system? No. RNG is server-side.

Do keys expire? Usually no, but check event-specific keys.

What's the most profitable crate to spin? Free vote crates (any positive value is profit). Among paid: Legendary at break-even, rarely better.
