Mending Books on DonutSMP — Best Sources & Trade Tricks

Mending books — librarian trading, fishing rates, prices, and buying tips.

Mending is the single most valuable enchantment in DonutSMP. Without it, every piece of gear has a finite lifespan. With it, your kit lasts forever. Here's how to source Mending books without breaking the bank.

Why Mending is irreplaceable

  • Repairs items using XP (no anvil cost)
  • Stops the "prior work penalty" anvil curse from making future repairs impossible
  • Without Mending, a high-tier sword costs 200k+ in repair materials over its lifetime

Three ways to get Mending books

Method 1 — Librarian trading (cheapest long-term)

The standard play: build a librarian villager farm.

  1. Get an unemployed villager
  2. Place a lectern within 1 block → becomes Librarian
  3. Check trades — if level 1 trade is NOT Mending, break the lectern → unemployment → replace → reroll
  4. Reroll until Mending book is offered

Reroll cost: 1 lectern each time (1 log + 4 planks + 4 wooden slabs = trivial). Final trade cost: ~20-40 emeralds per Mending book.

Top players have rooms of pre-rolled Mending librarians. One librarian = unlimited Mending books for life.

Method 2 — Fishing (passive)

Loot III + Luck of the Sea III fishing rod = ~1% Mending book per cast. At 4 sec/cast: ~9 books per hour.

Pros: Pure AFK. Cons: Slow, and the books roll random other enchants too (mostly junk).

Method 3 — Buy on /order or shop

Plain Mending book: ~8-12k coins on /order. Donut Depot stocks them too.

For a player without infrastructure, buy 4-6 books to get Mending on every armor piece + weapons. Total: ~50-70k.

Mending book strategy by player level

Player stage Best path
New (under 1M) Buy 4-6 books, enchant kit
Mid (1M-50M) Buy a pre-rolled librarian (~100k)
Established (50M+) Build librarian hall (10-20 rerolled)

Combining Mending with other enchants

Mending CONFLICTS with Infinity on bows. Choose one:

  • Infinity = unlimited arrows but no repair
  • Mending = repairs itself but you need arrows

For PvP: Mending bow. For survival exploration: Infinity bow.

Anvil cost math

Adding Mending to a Netherite chestplate via anvil:

  • First time: ~30 XP levels
  • Each subsequent enchant added: doubles (prior work penalty)

Pro play: combine all enchants on ONE BOOK first, then apply that combined book to the gear. Saves 60-70% of XP cost.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Trying to anvil Mending onto an already-heavily-enchanted item (too expensive)
  • ❌ Killing the librarian after first reroll attempt
  • ❌ Pairing Mending + Infinity on a bow (conflict)
  • ❌ Buying enchanted items that DON'T have Mending (you'll repair them forever)

Frequently Asked

Can I level up a librarian's Mending trade? The price drops from 40 emeralds → 5-10 emeralds with high reputation. Trade with it often.

Does fishing for Mending still work? Yes, but slow. Best as a side-AFK while doing something else.

Should I buy enchanted books or enchanted gear? Books always — gives you flexibility to apply to the gear you actually want.
