DonutSMP Combat Tips for New Players — Stop Dying

New player combat tips for DonutSMP — stop dying to common mistakes.

You're new to DonutSMP. You keep dying to other players and losing your kit. Here are the 10 combat tips that fix the most common new-player mistakes.

1. Stay in safe zones until you're geared

Most of DonutSMP is safe zones (around spawn, your home area). You can ONLY be killed in marked PvP zones like the warzone.

Rule: if you don't have full netherite + totem + crystal kit, don't enter PvP zones. Period.

2. Don't carry valuable items into combat zones

If you're entering a PvP zone for any reason, leave your good stuff in an ender chest first. Bring only what you're willing to lose.

The 10% rule: never carry more than 10% of your net worth into a PvP zone.

3. Always carry a totem

A Totem of Undying revives you at 1HP if you would have died. It's the single most important survival item.

  • Keep one in your offhand at ALL times outside safe zones
  • Carry 2-3 backups in your hotbar

You can craft totems from killing Evokers in Woodland Mansions, or buy them on /ah (~50-100k coins each).

4. Eat food before combat

Don't engage with empty saturation. Eat a Cooked Beef or Bread before any fight starts.

Better: God Apple for the buffs. G-Apple guide →

5. Know your escape route

Before entering any PvP zone, know:

  • Direction to safe zone
  • Hidden tunnels or terrain to break sight lines
  • Where to dump aggro (water, lava jumps)

Practice running away. It's a skill.

6. Don't fight 2v1 or 3v1

You'll lose. The math is brutal — 2 players placing crystals beats 1 player every time.

Run. Pop Slow Falling potion if you have to jump from height. Get to a safe zone.

7. Use Slow Falling potions liberally

They save lives. Cheap to craft (Phantom Membrane + Awkward Potion). Carry 2-3 always.

Use cases:

  • Falling from build height
  • Escaping from cliff edge
  • Surviving crystal explosions (gives you slow descent)

8. Don't get baited

Pros bait noobs by:

  • Standing still, looking weak (then full-stack reveal)
  • Pretending to flee (then turn around when you commit)
  • Bringing one friend just out of sight

Rule: if a fight feels too easy, it's a trap. Walk away.

9. Master the basic combat cycle

The Crystal PvP cycle is: place obsidian → place crystal → break crystal → repeat.

You don't need to be elite — just be consistent. 50% accurate Crystal PvP beats 100% miss-rate noob.

10. Learn from every death

Every time you die, ask:

  • What killed me?
  • Did I forget to totem swap?
  • Could I have run earlier?
  • Did I bring the right gear?

Track patterns. Adjust.

What to actually do for first 30 days

  1. Stay in safe zones
  2. Build a base + farms
  3. Save coins
  4. Watch Crystal PvP YouTube tutorials
  5. Practice in friendly duels with rank-locked friends
  6. By day 30, you have a full netherite kit + skill to actually engage

The shortcut

If you want to skip the noob phase:

  1. Buy 500M coins ($50 at Donut Depot)
  2. Buy full netherite kit (~200M coins)
  3. Buy 5-10 God Apples ($15)
  4. Buy 16 totems (~150M coins)
  5. Now you're geared like a mid-tier player at day 1

Doesn't make you good at Crystal PvP, but it makes you survive longer while learning.

Frequently Asked

Where do I get totems? Kill Evokers in Woodland Mansions or buy on /ah.

Is it cheating to ask for help in 2v1? No — most factions team up. Bring friends to PvP if you're outmatched solo.

Best server to practice basic Minecraft PvP? Hypixel for sword PvP. DonutSMP requires Crystal PvP — not transferable from other servers.
